THE RAMAGES | FALL PORTRAITS AT CROMWELL VALLEY PARK
I photograph the Ramages - Jessica, Brian, and their two rascals Luke + Allie twice a year each year for the kiddo's birthdays. It's something I always look forward to, even though Jessica and Brian always try to prepare me for an hour an a half of no smiles and mini meltdowns. But if the Ramages have taught me anything, its that I love to capture families in the moment. No, I don't want your child to be prim, proper, and smile like a catalog model, even though it's still super cute when I get that experience! Capturing families in their natural element, good or bad, smiles or no smiles, that's life. That's real. And the final result is so much more valuable.
Luke has his birthday in July so this session was all about Miss Allie. Jessica likes to call this "Allie's Independent Session" (cue the song "Miss Independent") and man was she ever. She wasn't going to sit down and smile for the camera because it's been 20 minutes of convincing her that we need an altogether family photo. Nope, that little girl is going to make me work for it. She doesn't just give out her smiles and silliness because you want it and that's why I love her! If there was ever a time during the session that I would want to rest on my shooting skills and just wait for Allie to come sit and smile right in the camera, I would never get down on my hands and knees, pants all dirty, and try something new. As a photographer, especially working with kids, you have to go with the flow. It's more than just clicking and shooting. You have to create an experience for the kids to enjoy. You have to put yourself in their shoes and make it fun. Let them play in the leaves, let them run around. Have their parents interact with them like they do at home. Jessica and Brian are always inventive and help make the sessions enjoyable for Luke + Allie. Without parents like them, and kids like theirs, I wouldn't have amazing sessions to show off like this one.
